FLYBOY AND THE INVISIBLE

young adult

Nothing in this deep earth dungeon has the flame in my soul right now. The strength of my spite. My anger. The raging passion of my rejection. If I could I’d turn my insides out. Show the stone walls my heart, my energy. Let this whole stinking place see how small it is in comparison.

Laced around a friendship gone wrong, Flyboy is a grimy, non-stop, working-class adventure, not about the boy who can fly, but, more so, about the one who’s left behind.

(Now a film script if anybody with a lot of money’s interested …)

‘The butcher didn’t get a lot of it, but dug it anyway.’ Matt Zurbo.

‘Yeah, some of it went over my head,’ Trevor Woollymitten. ‘But I’m short.’

HOT NIGHTS COOL DRAGONS

young adult /adult • short listed – aurealis awards

The man let rip his songs from the body, from the soul. Mikes were just made for mouths. Bobby doubted there was one in the world that could do him justice, that could capture him or his volume.

A journey into neon lit nights, weird things and dirty rock’n’roll. A book about the need to be lost, the conflict between passion and love, magic, and a brother and sister and their fall through music and the world.

‘I didn’t like this one …’ Trevor.

‘It’s true. He didn’t.’ Matt.

IDIOT PRIDE

young adult • short listed – cbc

I look at her shadowed shape, her eyes lit by street light. There,
in the hot summer dark. I have some thing, some self-thing. An idiot’s pride. And it has a power.

A book about cruising and being on the run without going anywhere. Raw, honest and devoid of soapboxes.
A good book for boys.

‘Blah, blah, blah …’ the book reviewers.
'Ripper book Matt … let's go fishing.' The Butcher.
